Preparing for Fall Gardening (What You Should Be Doing This Summer)

This year, courtesy of all the at-home-time resulting from COVID-19 closures, more people have started gardening than ever before. Perhaps you started with some indoor seeds this past spring and transplanted them outdoors when the weather was right. And, as you are reaping the harvest, you might think that you’re done, that this is the end of your gardening.

Truthfully, gardening can be a year-long hobby. Here’s how to prepare now for fall gardening.

Be Ready to Plant…

July 25-August 10 is another peak planting time in St. Joseph, MO. If you planted in the spring, you want to make sure you get your spring/summer crops cleared out of your garden before you start planting your fall produce. This might mean some hard work amending soil, and pulling out dead plants during some hot days, but this means you’ll have your garden ready for planting when the time is right.

All of the following fall crops do best when planted between July 25 and August 10:

  • Beans (snap and wax)
  • Beets
  • Broccoli
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Kohlrabi
  • Lettuce (loose leaf and butterhead)
  • Mustard
  • Radish
  • Spinach
  • Turnip

Also, you can plant most types of corn from now until August 1.

Be Ready to Pot…

Unlike spring preparation, it’s not completely necessary to start any of your crops from seeds indoors. Still, there are some types of vegetables that respond really well to being grown indoors and later transplanted outside.  This lets you get a jump start on your fall harvest while your summer garden is still producing.

If you’d like to start some seeds indoors and transplant them later, start growing broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts. Then, when the seeds have grown into healthy plants and the worst of the summer heat has passed, they’ll be ready to move outdoors.
