Small Business Highlight - Toe Beans Coffee House
Toe Beans Coffee House is located in one of the historic buildings of downtown, just off 8th St. and adjacent to the Missouri Theatre. The Toe Beans kitchen has a stairway that once led to the backstage area of the theater, and today’s visitors can occasionally catch the faint sounds of performances and singing drifting in.
Upon entering the shop, the air is filled with the delightful aroma of coffee. The walls are adorned with artful prints of dogs, which happen to be Sara's beloved pets. The front of the store is furnished with tables and chairs, while the back boasts a cozy seating area and a play corner for little ones. The counters proudly display unique jewelry and pins crafted by local artists.
More than just a coffee and snack stop, Toe Beans is a place with a mission. Sara, the passionate owner, envisioned a coffee shop that would give back to the community. With a background in non-profit work and education outreach, Sara's desire to make a positive impact led her to acquire the building in January 2023, and Toe Beans Coffee House opened its doors on March 3, 2023.
The name "Toe Beans" reflects Sara's love for wordplay and her desire to connect with fellow pet enthusiasts. It also signifies her commitment to supporting animals in the community. Additionally, the coffee beans and teas used in the shop are sourced from Kitty Town Coffee, a supplier that donates a portion of its proceeds to the local animal shelter. Moreover, Sara initiated "Mugs on Mission," a prepaid ticket program benefiting the YWCA, allowing women to enjoy a complimentary drink or snack. A similar program for the general public is the "Blessing Board" in the shop that encourages patrons to spread kindness by offering a gesture of goodwill to others. Sara's dedication to sustainability is evident as well. All compostable items are donated to local community gardens.
For Sara, being at Toe Beans every day is more than a job – it's a source of fulfillment. Interacting with customers, both regulars and newcomers, allows her to build meaningful connections and become an integral part of the small business community. Observing the steady stream of customers, from first-timers seeking matcha to familiar faces with their usual orders, highlights the inviting and cozy ambiance of the coffee shop.
Despite the inevitable challenges of entrepreneurship, Sara finds solace in the unwavering support of the downtown community. The mutual encouragement and camaraderie among businesses serve as a constant reminder that she is not alone in her journey. She runs ideas past some of her downtown small business owner friends. She knows they are there if she needs help and she will be there for them.
Sara's genuine warmth and kindness are visible to anyone who steps into her shop. Her infectious smile and unwavering compassion personify her commitment to spreading positivity and goodwill.
The menu offers a variety of drinks and snacks. Including coffee hot or iced with seasonal syrup flavors, iced teas, lemonades, frappes, smoothies and matcha. Some favorite foods include bacon cheddar rollups, snack cups, gluten free craving cups, and homemade poptarts.
