Our August Small Business Highlight shines on Summers Real Estate Photography, owned and run by the talented Diedra Summers. Diedra's journey as a real estate photographer began in 2017, starting out by exclusively working with Lorrie Ramseier. It wasn't until around 2020 that she fully established her business. Though she continues to learn and grow as a photographer, her main focus now is getting her name out there and expanding her business. Diedra was intentional about including "real estate photography" in her business name to emphasize her specialization in this field. She's all about capturing the unique beauty of properties, both residential and commercial, rather than focusing on portrait photography. Diedra says, I would rather focus my efforts on developing exceptional skills in one niche than spread myself across multiple niches and produce mediocre results. Diedra’s felt her last name was the perfect fit for her business name, making it both memorable and personal. Then began Summers Real Estate Photography.
Diedra has encountered some amusing and interesting situations during her work, including, light sockets inside showers, a set of stairs and doors that lead to nowhere, and some pretty interesting decor. She has met all kinds of fascinating people and animals during her photoshoots. Diedra said, “Dogs are so much easier to work around than cats. For starters, dogs are typically kenneled but if not, they want to be right next to me begging to be pet. This keeps them out of the shot. Cats, on the other hand, prefer to keep a close eye on me from about 15' away (insert eyeroll) and it seems the more I call them the less they want to move. I've had to edit out more cats than I care to admit.”
The most fulfilling part of Diedra's work is bringing out the best in every property she photographs. She loves walking through different homes, experiencing the full spectrum of price points, and imagining the potential of each space. She often finds herself contemplating the history and personal stories behind these properties, which she believes adds an extra touch to her final photography.
In the face of challenges, Diedra sees them as temporary obstacles that eventually work out. Her passion for her work keeps her motivated and moving forward, no matter what comes her way. Being a part of the St. Joseph small business community is something Diedra truly enjoys. She loves making connections and helping businesses present themselves beautifully to their clients and customers.
